If you watch our YouTube channel, you’ll know that we are big Canon RF lenses and camera fans here at GearFocus. While we are usually focused on giving you the best deals on used gear, every now and again, a good deal on new gear comes around. Canon has lowered the prices of a select few RF mount lenses, with the most notable being the 100mm Macro, the 50mm F1.2 (a personal favorite), and the 15-35 F/2.8.   Recently Canon has come under fire for threatening to sue third-party lens manufacturers for making AutoFocus compatible lenses, violating their RF lens mount Patent. Many users feel that this limits Canon to a much more high price market and limits its options in the budget area. We recently released a Youtube video on the new Canon R7, claiming it to be one of the best budget options around. The largest topic in the comments was about the lack of third party, native mount lenses, particularly for the smaller APS-C sensor cameras, like the R7. As of right now, the only option for fully automatic, RF mount lenses is the pricey, full-frame, L-Series lenses directly from Canon. Bulky and heavy, Full-Frame lenses are counter-intuitive for the smaller APS-C sensor cameras. The purpose of those smaller cameras is to be smaller and lighter, and heavy lenses would defeat that purpose.  It appears Canon is listening to the price complaints however and has lowered the prices on some of the lenses. Hopefully we will see more lens options from Canon in the near future.  Canon RF lenses

NEW LENSES STILL TOO MUCH?

If new RF mount lenses are too expensive for your budget right now. A great option for cheaper lenses is adapted third-party EF mount lenses. The canon EF-RF lens mount adapters are currently available at most authorized resellers and are around $100 US. A 0.71x speedbooster may also be a good option if you have an APS-C camera.  It is worth noting that the Canon Cease and Desist letters only pertain to manufacturers making lenses with autofocus components and capability. This does not effect companies like Loawa or Sirui who are making fully manual focus lenses for the RF mount. The RF mount is the way forward for Canon users. It offers a unique flexibility that is something only mirrorless cameras will be able to achieve. The RF Mount can be adapted to pretty much any other mount, with the exception of the Sony E-Mount. This allows you to buy inexpensive mount adapters and use virtually any lens on an RF Mount camera. Here at GearFocus, we often use adapted lenses on our Canon cameras. One of our personal favorite combinations is the EOS R with an EF 24-105 F4 or our R7 with the FD 35mm F/2.8. The market for EF mount lenses is very broad as the EF mount has been around for well over 20 years now if you were looking for great deals on EF mount lenses head on over toward lens section here on www.gearfocus.com where we have a wide variety of EF mount lenses.
