2ND UPDATE: Specs Confirmed by Canon!
UPDATE: Canon confirms development of EOS R5, and some specs have also been confirmed!
Could this be the end all, be all, of mirrorless cameras? The specs released by CanonRumors for the Canon EOS R5 are INSANE!! The name has also been confirmed as the “Canon EOS R5.” If rumors are true, this camera will be boasting some serious specs such as 8K video, a 45MP sensor, 4K video at 120fps, and IBIS! What do you think, will you be upgrading or switching?
You can read more about the confirmed specs here. So it looks like Canon has confirmed a number of the leaked specs!
Here’s what they’ve released regarding the R5:
Here’s what we learned from CanonRumors regarding the EOS R5:
So let’s start with the main highlights of the Canon EOS R5! 8K RAW* recording will absolutely be a game changer. I’m not sure how realistic this is considering the 1Dx Mark III was just released. The 1Dx line, however, is not a video line of cameras, they are more focused towards the photography market, so it will be interesting to see how Canon moves forward. Either way, having 8K in the camera would be incredible!!
Next we have 4K up to 120 frames per second. This is another spec that would be absolutely insane, especially considering that the current EOS R only does 720p120 and 1080p60. This would be a huge step up! Even if the Canon EOS R5 “only” offered 4K60, that would still be a pretty awesome improvement.
A 45 megapixel sensor will please a lot of the pixel peepers and the photographers wanting higher resolution photos. That is a pretty decent step up from the current 30MP sensor on the EOS R. This would be a big draw for anyone in need of a hybrid video/stills camera. And 12 fps continuous shooting will attract even more photographers looking for a solid hybrid camera.
The Canon EOS R5 camera body is rumored to have some updates as well. If the rumors are true, the camera will no longer have the touch bar at the top. It will also possibly have a scroll wheel on the back which will be a nice addition to any former Sony shooters that have become accustomed to that. No word yet on whether it will be able to be mapped to do different functions.
The EOS R has a pretty solid battery as is, so any improvements there will just be icing on the cake! And the Canon EOS R5 is also rumored to have 5 stops of IBIS which can be paired with lenses that have stabilization to increase it up to 7 or 8 stops of correction.
With a launch rumored in July of 2020, we could be getting confirmation very soon on what the specs actually are for this camera. So fingers crossed! We’re hoping to hear some confirmation of any of this asap, and more importantly get more info on a possible price point for this camera. If the Canon EOS R5 comes in anywhere near the cost of say a 1DX, it’ll flip the whole mirrorless market on it’s head.
Man are we excited!!!
